Tips for maintaining your eco-friendly home this winter

December 12, 2025

Winter maintenance of a home in Quebec requires special attention to ventilation, humidity, snow management, and proper equipment operation. Here are the essential steps to keep your systems in good working order during the cold season.

For proper use of ventilation systems

Set the air exchanger to 35% relative humidity.

The ideal indoor humidity level is between 30% and 50%. In winter, a level of around 35% helps limit condensation on windows. It is therefore essential not to go below this level to prevent the air from drying out and damaging materials such as wood or gypsum.

Adjustments should be made according to the instructions in the air exchanger manual, particularly in the sections entitled Choosing the Priority Dehumidistat and How to Adjust the Relative Humidity Level.

Maintain the air exchanger

Before performing any maintenance, always turn off and unplug the device.

Cleaning the filters

  • Open the unit and remove the filters.
  • Clean them with a vacuum cleaner, hot water, and mild soap.
  • Dry them completely before putting them back in place.

Cleaning the casing

  • Clean the interior with a clean, damp cloth.
  • Wipe with a clean, dry cloth.

Cleaning the core(s)

Depending on the type of exchanger:

HRV (heat recovery ventilator)

  • Remove the core.
  • Vacuum the dust.
  • Soak for 3 hours in warm water and mild soap.
  • Rinse lightly and allow to dry completely.

ERV (energy recovery ventilator)

  • Energy recovery core: remove dust with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush. Never immerse it in water.

Clean air intakes and exhaust vents

Remove debris, dust, snow, and frost from air intakes and exhaust vents connected to:

  • the air exchanger
  • the dryer
  • the range hood

The exterior screen can accumulate dust, particles, and insects, which reduces air flow and can increase energy consumption or shorten the life of the appliances.

Exhaust vents can also become clogged with dust contained in the exhaust air, such as in a dryer.

Cleaning range hood filters

Most range hoods have a washable grease filter. The usual cleaning procedure is as follows:

  1. Fill the sink with boiling water.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of baking soda and, if necessary, dish soap.
  3. Sprinkle the filter with baking soda.
  4. Stir the water with a utensil.
  5. Submerge the filter.
  6. Let it soak for at least an hour.
  7. Turn it over halfway through if necessary.
  8. Scrub with a non-abrasive brush.
  9. Rinse with hot water, dry, and reinstall.

To properly manage snow and ice

Remove snow from basement windows and window wells

Always clear window wells to prevent water infiltration and keep exits accessible. Remove debris and clear the drain.

Remove snow from air intakes and exhaust vents

All air intakes and exhaust vents must remain clear to prevent blockages and allow them to function normally.

Do not use deicing salts.

Use sand or gravel instead. (Salts accelerate corrosion of metals such as screews and plates used on wooden balconies and will damage concrete!)

Have snow removed from the roof in case of heavy precipitation

The roof can withstand average snowfall, but excessive accumulation must be monitored. A professional can remove the snow.

Snow removal also helps to limit ice and icicles, although their formation may be normal depending on the orientation of the house and weather conditions.

Recommendation: heating the garage in winter

  • Maintain a temperature of 10°C if the garage is used solely for storage.
  • Heat to the same temperature as the rest of the house if used as a workshop.
  • Clean or replace weatherstripping depending on its condition.

To prepare doors and windows for extreme cold

Lubricate locks with silicone lubricant.

This reduces the risk of freezing. Highly insulated homes may experience lock freezing during extreme cold weather.

In case of occasional freezing: use a lock de-icer.

The indoor humidity level should be around 35%, then reduced to 30% during extreme cold weather.

Purchase a lock de-icer.

Keep it in an accessible place such as the glove compartment of your car.

Spray mechanisms and weatherstripping with silicone lubricant.

This prevents moisture from accumulating and prevents operational problems.

In summary

Winter maintenance of a home, whether eco-friendly or traditional, is essential to ensure healthy indoor air, optimize ventilation performance, and extend the life of your equipment. By following these seasonal tips, you will:

  • Maintain adequate humidity levels to prevent condensation and protect your materials.
  • Preserve the efficiency of your air exchanger, exhaust vents, and range hood.
  • Reduce the risks associated with snow, ice, and extreme cold.
  • Improve the durability and safety of your home, winter after winter.
