Fall Home Maintenance Tips: Prepare Your House for Winter
Get your home ready for fall with this handy seasonal maintenance guide. Find all the essential steps to ensure the durability of your eco-friendly home: cleaning curbs and gutters, maintaining French drains, chimney sweeping, checking heating and ventilation, replacing smoke alarm batteries, and equipment maintenance. These fall maintenance tips will help you effectively protect your home before winter arrives.
Prepare the Exterior for Winter
Clean window wells and clear the drain
Remove leaves and debris that could block the window well drain.
Clear the French drain and storm drain outlets
If your French drain (around your foundation) or stormwater outlet leads to a ditch or other area on your property, make sure it’s clear and draining properly.
If you notice iron ochre deposits, schedule more frequent maintenance (every two years or as recommended by a professional). Professionals clean the drains by injecting gas into the conduit, and access points around your home make this easier.
Clean gutter leaf guards and downspouts (late fall)
Make sure gutters and downspouts are free of leaves and debris so water flows away from your foundation. Test by pouring water at the highest point and checking for leaks.
Always secure your ladder before working. Keep a gap between downspout ends and the ground frost can lift the soil and damage the downspouts if they rest on it.
Store garden hoses
Disconnect hoses and store them indoors for the winter to extend their lifespan.
Outdoor faucets are generally frost-proof, with an automatic purge system. Just ensure the tap is fully closed after use.
Use sand or gravel instead of de-icing salt
Salt is harmful to the environment, accelerates concrete corrosion, and worsens freeze-thaw cycles (especially for concrete less than two years old). Choose sand or gravel to improve traction on ice.
Maintain Heating and Ventilation Systems
Have your chimney and wood stove cleaned
If you didn’t clean them in the spring, schedule a chimney sweep in the fall before heating season. Spring cleaning is ideal since deposits are dry and easier to remove, giving you time for repairs if needed.
If you use your fireplace daily in winter, plan a mid-season sweep after 3–4 cords of wood. Frequency depends on the wood type, burning practices, and wood moisture levels.
Clean heating appliances (dust removal)
Most manufacturers recommend cleaning heating units (like baseboards) at least once a year. Always:
- Cut the power at the breaker before cleaning.
- Wipe with a soft cloth, possibly with mild dish soap.
- Dry thoroughly to avoid staining or corrosion.
- Avoid abrasive or chemical cleaners.
Clean air exchanger filters
- Turn off and unplug the unit.
- Open it and remove the filters protecting the heat recovery core.
- Clean with a vacuum, warm water, and mild dish soap.
- Dry completely before reinstalling.
Clean kitchen hood filters
Most hoods have a washable grease filter. Check your user guide for cleaning frequency.
Typical cleaning steps:
- Fill the sink with boiling water.
- Add ¼ cup baking soda and optional dish soap.
- Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the filter.
- Submerge and soak for one hour (flip halfway if needed).
- Scrub gently with a non-abrasive brush.
- Rinse with hot water, dry, and reinstall.
Check Other Household Equipment
Pour water into P-traps
Add water into drains in the mechanical room or under the washer to prevent odors and gases from entering your home.
Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries
Change batteries when daylight saving time begins or ends.
Vacuum the detector monthly with a soft brush attachment to keep it clean.
Test the sump pump
If your house has one, check functionality by lifting the float (as if water level was rising). The pump should activate immediately.
